Kayou produces more My Little Pony card products than most collectors realise, across a playable trading card game and several collector lines, each with its own editions. This is a quick guide on what's inside each one, how they differ and which to buy first.
Every My Little Pony card line at a glance
The playable My Little Pony TCG. A real trading card game with a full ruleset, deck construction and competitive starter decks. Fantasy Wonderland (series 1), Discord Edition (series 2) and Nightmare Night (series 3) are all sets of the same game, so every card works together, and the Friendships Begin starter decks get you playing straight away.
The collector lines. No gameplay at all. You open packs and chase rarities:
- Moon Edition: the flagship Friendship Eternal line, five series so far, topped by the Zenith Rare.
- Rainbow Edition: brighter artwork than Moon Edition, in 20-pack booster boxes and sleeved premium packs.
- Fun Moments Edition: playful snapshot-style artwork with 30 packs to a box.
- Equestria Girls: the Magic Book box set, starring Sunset Shimmer and the human-world Mane Six.
Every line is officially licensed by Hasbro and printed to the same high standard.

The playable My Little Pony TCG
How the game plays
A turn runs through four phases: Starting, Main, Contact and End. Your Main Character sits in the Story Area and advances through four Stages, and reaching Stage IV wins the game. Cards clash during Contact, Plans let you set up moves ahead of time and spent cards go to a Retirement Area rather than leaving play entirely.
The clever part is the resource system. Your Scene cards flip automatically, one on turn one, two on turn two and climbing every turn, so there's no resource screw. Games are decided by the choices you make rather than the order your deck shuffled into.
Decks are a 50 card Main Deck plus a separate 15 card Scene Deck, built around one of the Mane Six as your Main Character. You can run four copies of any card by ID, and foil and standard versions count as the same card.
Series 1 Fantasy Wonderland Booster Box (BP01)
20 packs of 5 cards. The set runs 191 cards across 13 rarities: Common, Uncommon, Silver Rare, Sapphire Rare, Emerald Rare, Colorful Rare, Ruby Rare and Gold Rare, plus five Shining parallel tiers marked with a ※ symbol. Every pack contains a scene card so the floor is high. A sealed box guarantees a Shining Gold Rare, a Ruby Rare and a Shining Emerald Rare.

Series 1 Fantasy Wonderland Booster Pack
A single 5 card pack. The cheapest way into the entire My Little Pony range and enough to judge the card quality before committing to a box.
Friendships Begin Starter Deck Set of 6
Six preconstructed decks, one built around each of the Mane Six. Every deck contains a 50 card Main Deck, a 15 card Scene Deck, a Main Character Card, four Story Cards and a printed rules sheet as well as 3 unique booster packs. Ready to play out of the box and genuinely competitive, not deliberately weakened to sell boosters. Individual decks are available separately if you only want one character.
Series 2 Discord Edition Booster Box (BP02)
The second set in the playable line and it mirrors BP01 exactly: 191 cards across the same 13 rarities, with the same five Shining parallel tiers. If you know how to read a BP01 card code you already know how to read BP02.
What changes is everything inside that structure. Discord joins as a playable character at Silver Rare, Uncommon and Common, which is the first time the spirit of chaos has been buildable. The Cutie Mark Crusaders get a proper run of cards and Daring Do, Philomena and Big McIntosh all arrive at Silver Rare.
The story cards move a full season forward, covering Lesson Zero, Hurricane Fluttershy, Baby Cakes, The Last Roundup, May the Best Pet Win and Sweet and Elite. If BP01 was Season 1, BP02 is Season 2.
The neatest touch is in the Emerald Rare scene cards. BP01 gave you the exteriors: Golden Oak Library, Fluttershy's Cottage, Sugarcube Corner. BP02 takes you inside the same six locations. Golden Oak Library Floor 2, the living room of Fluttershy's Cottage, the storefront of Sugarcube Corner. Collectors running both sets can pair them up.

Series 3 Nightmare Night Booster Box (BP03)
The third set in the playable line, released 25 September 2026. Same box as BP01 and BP02: 20 packs of 5 cards, the same 13 rarities and the same five Shining parallel tiers, with 190 cards to collect. Every box also comes with a bonus promo pack holding a full-art Treat token card.
This one is all Halloween. The Mane Six are in costume (Twilight's a witch, Applejack's a mummy, Pinkie Pie's a pumpkin) and the villains finally get an invite, with Nightmare Moon, Discord, Queen Chrysalis and King Sombra all in the set. The new mechanic is Treats, a marker that some cards hand out, some spend and some get stronger while holding.
The story cards are brand new this time instead of retold episodes: six Halloween stories, one for each of the Mane Six. The Shining Gold Rares break the pattern too, going to Star Swirl the Bearded, Twilight Sparkle, Princess Luna, Shining Armor and Princess Cadance. The Emerald Rare scenes are Nightmare Night Square and Nightmare Night Market, each split into three panels that line up into one wide scene. Moon Edition products
Moon Edition sits within the Friendship Eternal line. Five English series so far, each with its own rarity ceiling. Pack counts and cards per pack vary by series and edition, and each product page lists exactly what's inside. The tiers climb through Rare, Super Rare, Holo Rare, Ultra Rare, Super Secret Rare, Super Golden Rare, Luminous Secret Rare and at the very top the Zenith Rare.
It works very differently to the playable game. With no guaranteed premium slot, the highs feel higher and the flat boxes feel flatter. And rather than hunting a whole tier, you're chasing one specific named Zenith card.
English Series 1
The foundation set. Classic Ponyville cast with clean artwork, 10 packs per box. Secret Rare is the ceiling here because Kayou had not yet introduced the Zenith tier.
English Series 2
Wider character roster with better foil treatments, 10 packs per box. This is the set that introduced the Zenith tier, headlined by a single Shining Celebration card in a 189 card set.
Series 3, 15th Anniversary Edition
Released for 15 years of Friendship is Magic. The largest Moon Edition set at 290 cards across 10 rarity levels with anniversary artwork throughout, 10 packs per box. Three Zenith cards rather than one, so the top tier is marginally more reachable.
Series 4, First Print Edition
10 packs per box. Every card in the initial production run carries a First Print logo, as does the outer box. There are no First Print reprints, so an ordinary card from this run is scarcer than the same card from any later printing. Worth buying sealed if you collect rather than open.
Sleeved Premium Packs
Single English packs in protective sleeves, for anyone who wants a taste of Moon Edition without a full box. Every pack has 8 cards.
- NA03 Sleeved Premium Pack: our best-selling pack. It's the English (NA) Moon Edition Series 3 First Print, from Kayou's biggest My Little Pony set with 290 cards across 10 rarity levels. The top chase is the ◇ZR "Shining Zenith".

Rainbow Edition
Rainbow Edition Series 1 Booster Box
20 packs of 5 cards, so 100 cards per box, with brighter artwork than the standard Moon Edition printings. The chase cards are the Valentine's-themed XR Sweet Gift cards, the translucent ocean-themed TGR cards and the USR Dreamy Watercolour cards.
Rainbow Edition Series 2 Sleeved Premium Pack
A single sleeved pack of 5 cards from Rainbow Edition Series 2. The set has 170 cards across 11 rarity levels. It introduces the XR "Cozy Hearthside Chat" autumn series and all-new Outfit-Change costume cards.

Fun Moments Edition Series 2
Another Friendship Eternal collector line, built around playful snapshot-style artwork. Series 2 is the Silver Edition in warm peach packaging: 30 packs of 5 cards, so 150 cards per box, with Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, Rarity and more across the rarity spectrum.
Fun Moments Edition Series 03
Series 03 moves to 30 packs of 4 cards (120 cards per box) and runs 9 rarity tiers, each with its own theme, from Shining Comic Super Rares and Pixel Arcade Ultra Rares to Winter Snapshot Creative Rares and stained-glass ◇CR Parallel Creative Rares.
Magic Book Equestria Girls Box Set
For Equestria Girls fans. The box is styled like a magic book and holds 4 packs of 5 cards, plus one book-exclusive SP "Through the Mirror" card. The full set is 87 cards across five card types, featuring Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy and Applejack.
Which product should you buy first?
Playable or collector? Go for the playable TCG if you want to actually play, you're buying for two people or you want a guaranteed result from every box. Go for Moon Edition if you want the pure opening experience and enjoy chasing one specific card. They complement each other rather than compete, so plenty of collectors buy both.
Smallest possible commitment: a single Fantasy Wonderland booster pack. Five cards, guaranteed scene card and enough to judge whether the print quality is worth your money.
Best value box: the Fantasy Wonderland booster box. Twenty packs with three guaranteed premium pulls, which is a higher floor than any other product here.
Best for a rarity chase: Moon Edition Series 3. The biggest set with the most generous high tier slot structure.
Best single pack for collectors: the NA03 Sleeved Premium Pack. Eight First Print cards from Moon Edition Series 3, Kayou's biggest My Little Pony set.
Most time sensitive: Moon Edition SEA Series 4 First Print. Once the initial run sells through there are no further First Print printings.
If you already own BP01: the Discord Edition. Same structure you know with a new cast and the interior scene cards that pair with your Series 1 exteriors.
If you love Halloween or villains: Nightmare Night. Same odds as BP01 and BP02, with the Mane Six in costume, the villains joining in and the new Treat mechanic.
