My Little Pony TCG Moon Edition and Fantasy Wonderland booster boxes side by side - which to buy

My Little Pony TCG Moon Edition vs Fantasy Wonderland - Which Should You Buy?

If you're new to the My Little Pony card game and you've been looking at what Kayou puts out, you've probably noticed there are two very different product lines sitting side by side. Moon Edition and Fantasy Wonderland. Both made by Kayou, both officially licensed by Hasbro, both featuring the characters from Friendship is Magic. But they are fundamentally different products, one is a fully playable trading card game, the other is a collectibles line. Understanding that difference is the single most important thing before you spend a dollar.

Fantasy Wonderland - A Real, Playable TCG

My Little Pony TCG Fantasy Wonderland Series 1 booster box Australia

Fantasy Wonderland is a trading card game. Not a collectibles set that happens to have card stats printed on it. An actual, designed-from-scratch TCG with its own ruleset, mechanics, deck construction, and competitive play.

The game runs on a four-phase turn structure. Starting Phase, Main Phase, Contact Phase and End Phase, built around a system Kayou calls Force of Harmony. Your Main Character card sits in the Story Area and progresses through four stages. Reach Stage IV and you win. Cards interact through Contact Phases, Plans let you execute strategic moves, Scenes function as a resource system that auto-flips each turn eliminating any mana-screw variance, and your used cards rotate through a Retirement Area. The max deck size is 50 cards with a 15-card Scene Deck, and you're limited to four copies of any card by ID so foil versions and standard versions count as the same card for deck building purposes.

The resource system is worth highlighting. In Pokémon, a bad draw can end your game before turn three. In the MLP TCG, you automatically flip a new Scene card every single turn, one on turn one, two on turn two, building automatically. No variance, no resource screw, ever. It's one of the cleaner design decisions in any modern TCG.

The starter decks including the Friendships Begin Starter Deck Set of 6 are fully competitive right out of the box. Each deck is built around one of the Mane Six with a complete 50-card Main Deck, 15-card Scene Deck, Main Character Card, four Story Cards, and a game sheet with full rules. This is intentional. Kayou didn't weaken the preconstructed decks to push booster purchases, every starter can genuinely compete.

What's in a Fantasy Wonderland Booster Box?

The Fantasy Wonderland Booster Box contains 20 packs of 5 cards. Rarity tiers run from C and U up through SR, GR, CR, SPR, and secret alternate arts marked ※CR, ※GR, and ※SPR — the rarest pulls in the set, featuring distinct alternate artwork with 3D foil stamping that genuinely has to be seen in person. The card quality from Kayou's printing technology is exceptional. Intricate textures, vibrant colours, premium finishes.

If you want to try before committing to a box, there's a single booster pack. One pack is enough to understand the product.

New: Series 2 Discord Edition 🆕

The TCG line now has its second set. The Series 2 Discord Edition Booster Box brings the spirit of chaos himself into the game, with story-driven scenes of the Mane 6 facing Discord's unpredictable magic. The set spans 191 card types across 13 rarity levels, including the premium RR◇, CR◇ and GR◇ parallel tiers, exclusive artist illustration cards and signature-print collectibles. If Series 1 sold you on the line, this is the next box to open.

Who Is Fantasy Wonderland For?

Anyone who wants to actually play a card game. Anyone who enjoys deck construction, competitive matches, or the satisfaction of a well-designed game system. Also anyone buying a gift — the visual quality of the cards makes an immediate impression even on someone who doesn't know the game.

Moon Edition - Pure Collectibles

My Little Pony Moon Edition Series 4 First Print Edition booster box Australia

Moon Edition is part of the Friendship Eternal line. There are no gameplay mechanics, no deck building, no matches to play. It is purely a collectibles product: you open packs, you collect cards, you chase rarities. That's the experience, and it's a very good one.

This is actually what makes Moon Edition special. Kayou designed it specifically as a collector's product in partnership with Hasbro, with a rarity structure built entirely around the chase experience rather than gameplay balance. The result is some of the most visually impressive licensed trading cards produced in recent years.

The Rarity Chase

Moon Edition's rarity tiers get progressively more spectacular as you move up. The base series runs through Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare (SR), and Holo Rare (HR). From Series 3 onwards, Kayou introduced Ultra Rare (UR), Super Secret Rare (SC), Shimmering Goldflow — Super Golden Rare (SGR), Luminous Secret Rare (LSR), and at the top — the Shining Celebration, Zenith Rare (ZR). The ZR cards are genuinely rare and feature the Mane 6 in full commemorative artwork with prismatic and holographic finishes that are unlike anything else in the MLP space.

The First Print Edition mechanic adds another layer. First Print logo is stamped on both the outer packaging and every individual card in the initial production run. No reprints. Once that run sells out, that version is gone.

The Four Series

  • Series 1 — The foundation. Classic Ponyville cast, solid foil quality, 10 packs per box. The right starting point to understand the base set.
  • Series 2 — Expanded roster, improved foil treatments. Builds naturally on Series 1.
  • Series 3 — 15th Anniversary Edition — Exclusive anniversary artwork, the introduction of SC, SGR, LSR, and UR tiers. The step up in card quality from Series 2 to 3 is significant.
  • Series 4 — First Print Edition — The current release. First Print logo on every card and the outer box. 10 packs per box. Limited production run with no reprints — when this stock is gone, this version is gone permanently.

Premium single packs are also available — the NA01 and NA02 sleeved premium packs, with a guaranteed high-rarity pull structure — Super Rare, Holo Rare, Super Secret Rare, and three Rares minimum per pack.

Who Is Moon Edition For?

Collectors. People who want to build a set, chase rare cards, display them, and follow a product line across multiple series. MLP fans who want the most complete representation of the IP in card form. People who love the opening experience and the rarity chase without needing a game to play.

What Should You Buy First?

If you want to play: Start with a Fantasy Wonderland starter deck, then add booster packs to customise your build. The single pack is the lowest commitment entry point in the entire MLP catalogue. Already playing? The new Series 2 Discord Edition is where the line goes next.

If you want to collect: Start with Moon Edition Series 4 First Print — specifically because it's time-sensitive. First Print stock does not get reprinted. Series 1 and 2 are more available and make sense as the base of a full set collection.

If you want both: That's the complete MLP TCG experience. They're complementary products — one gives you the game, one gives you the collection.
